Newtown began in 1684 when it was founded by William Penn, the renowned English Quaker and founder of Pennsylvania. Penn envisioned Newtown as a community that would serve as an idyllic retreat for wealthy Philadelphia residents, offering country homes surrounded by open landscapes, while also fostering a growing farming community to support the region’s agricultural needs.
Newtown played a significant role in American history during the Revolutionary War. In December 1776, George Washington made Newtown his headquarters following his daring crossing of the Delaware River. From this strategic base, Washington and the Continental Army orchestrated their surprise attack on the British at Trenton, a key victory that boosted morale and marked a turning point in the war. Just a week later, the army secured another triumph at the Battle of Princeton, further solidifying Newtown’s place in the pages of American history.
The town is also steeped in Quaker history. Newtown was home to Edward Hicks, a devout Christian minister of the Society of Friends (Quakers) and a distinguished painter.
